Patriots
(3-0) |
Business-like in their approach, the Patriots are flying high,
posing tough matchup problems on the outside. But let's not hand them the Lombardi Trophy just yet. |
 |
2 |
(3) |
Cowboys
(3-0) |
Dallas has some impressive offensive weapons and Tony Romo has
come a long way. He played an outstanding game versus last season's NFC champs. |
 |
3 |
(2) |
Colts
(3-0) |
All they do is win football games. The Colts have a lot of weapons on both sides
of the ball and should contend to the very end. Defensive unit up front was impressive last week. |
 |
4 |
(6) |
Steelers
(3-0) |
Light early-season schedule aside, the Steelers have played well and their QB appears to have made strides in
his development. Bengals, Ravens ahead. |
 |
5 |
(9) |
Ravens
(2-1) |
Defense has experienced some physical setbacks, but continues
to play at a high level. Offense isn't beating themselves. |
 |
6 |
(4) |
Chargers
(1-2) |
Forget about their offensive woes, the defense is not
nearly what it was in '06. Still the best in a weak AFC
West division. Look for them to get well quickly versus KC. |
 |
7 |
(5) |
Bears
(1-2) |
The Bears top, but already depleted defense and special teams units
can not be enough to overcome a spotty running game, average wideouts,
and brutal QB play. |
 |
8 |
(11) |
Packers
(3-0) |
Favre has
retooled his game and the defense is playing suprisingly well. But with the 32nd-ranked rushing attack, do they have enough balance? |
 |
9 |
(12) |
Seahawks
(2-1) |
Experienced squad that doesn't lose it's composure with the game on
the line. Extended injury at the RB position to Alexander could be
costly. Secondary has some holes. |
 |
10 |
(8) |
Bengals
(1-2) |
Palmer can keep the Bengals in any game. Now if only the inconsistent defense can keep pace. Injury to Rudi
Johnson could prove costly versus the Patriots. |
 |
11 |
(7) |
Broncos
(2-1) |
Once a team strength, the Broncos have had a very difficult time
stopping the run. Injury to Cutler could further stall inconsistent
offense. |
 |
12 |
(10) |
Lions
(2-1) |
Defense couldn't slow anyone down last week as their free safety led the team in tackles, but the high-powered offense continues to move the ball through the
air. |
 |
13 |
(15) |
Jaguars
(2-1) |
The Jags grind it out offensively while continuing to play their tough,
trademark defense in spite of some key injuries. |
 |
14 |
(16) |
Titans
(2-1) |
Well-coached, disciplined defense that really gets after
people. Fast-improving QB still has things to prove as a downfield passer before they're true playoff contenders. |
 |
15 |
(14) |
Texans
(2-1) |
Another fast-developing club that -- if they can maintain consistency -- could contend for a playoff berth. But can they run the ball consistently? |
 |
16 |
(18) |
Panthers
(2-1) |
Ground game was much improved in a lackluster win over the
struggling Falcons. Panthers don't have much out there in support of
the multi-talented Steve Smith |
 |
17 |
(22) |
Eagles
(1-2) |
McNabb, Westbrook and Curtis stepped up big, but does this team have
the character and consistency to do so on a regular basis? |
 |
18 |
(24) |
Buccaneers
(2-1) |
Might be the worst 2-1 club in the league, but then again how about
the Panthers? Or the Broncos? Or for that matter the Redskins? |
 |
19 |
(13) |
49ers
(2-1) |
So far the '07 version of the 49ers' football club development as a
football team has been stalled by third-year QB Alex Smith |
 |
20 |
(23) |
Redskins
(2-1) |
How they respond to heart-breaking loss to the Giants after a bye week will tell a lot about the fabric of this team. Still question if QB has the overall skills to get it done. |
 |
21 |
(17) |
Vikings
(1-2) |
Offense really struggled in loss to the the Chiefs. Based on their
early and preseason play, the Vikings have NO chance to win with Jackson or Holcomb at QB. |
 |
22 |
(21) |
Bills
(0-3) |
If injuries to key personnel continue, the already thin, inexperienced
Bills could free-fall. Defense is struggling and neither QB has thrown a
TD pass in a 180 minutes of football. |
 |
23 |
(19) |
Rams
(0-3) |
League's biggest disappointment. Even with one of the top QBs in the
game they can't score. O-line is in shambles. Decision-makers at the top haven't a clue. |
 |
24 |
(20) |
Saints
(0-3) |
I ranked the Saints 31st in my preseason power ranking of 2006. Maybe I
was just a year off! Offense doesn't own anything. Reggie Bush looks like a poor man's Terry Metcalf. |
 |
25 |
(25) |
Jets
(1-2) |
Jets rank at the bottom third in the league in rushing and their
ability to stop the run. Not a good sign if you are trying to compete in a division
with the New England Patriots. |
 |
26 |
(26) |
Cardinals
(1-2) |
Franchise QB does not appear to possess some of the essential
qualities one must have at the position (body quickness, feet, and arm).
|
 |
27 |
(27) |
Giants
(1-2) |
A win is a win, but this club has a very long way to go to be
considered a contender in the NFC. |
 |
28 |
(28) |
Browns
(1-2) |
Defense has given up far too many yards over the past two weeks.
Offense has done some impressive things, but doesn't have the
firepower to do it on it's own. |
 |
29 |
(29) |
Raiders
(1-2) |
As Yogi Berra once said, "It's Deja Vu all over again," but Oakland won. Look for the NFL competition committee to outlaw calling timeouts
before the snap of a FG in the future. |
 |
30 |
(31) |
Chiefs
(1-2) |
To win they have to face a club as inept as they are at QB, thus the victory over the Vikings. Larry Johnson has been a
major disappointment so far. |
 |
31 |
(30) |
Dolphins
(0-3) |
I'm still waiting for all that Ted Ginn excitement we were promised on
draft day. Having your 4 secondary starters among the team's top 5
tacklers is not a good sign. |
 |
32 |
(32) |
Falcons
(0-3) |
Harrington kept them in the contest, but good teams find a way to win ball games. The DeAngelo Hall incident and how they handled it tells you something
about this organization. |
