Pre-Draft Team Needs: Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers are coming off of a solid season but game up short in the playoffs. We're taking a look at what areas they need to upgrade in order to take the next step.

Players Added

Brandon Chillar/LB - The Packers smartly use the draft to build their team and use free agency to supplement the roster--not the other way around. With that said, Chillar will compete against SLB Brady Poppinga for the starting job. That linebacker position is clearly one that the coaches would like to get more consistent play from.

Players Lost

Craig Nall/QB - He's been with the team twice but would be looking at a No. 3 role if he re-signed again.

Bubba Franks/TE - His job with the team became expendable due to the development of Donald Lee who received a contract extension last season.

Ryan Krause/TE - He still hasn't received much attention in free agency and really isn't what Green Bay needs from a backup tight end. Krause isn't known for his blocking prowess and blocking is what they lost when they cut Franks.

Corey Williams/DT - They traded him to the Cleveland Browns who were badly in need of defensive line help. Williams' departure opens up a chance for former first-round pick Justin Harrell to see more playing time.

Frank Walker/CB - Green Bay didn't have any intention of bringing him back so he found a job with the Baltimore Ravens where he'll compete for a nickel position.

Pre-Draft Team Needs

1) Cornerback - With their top two cornerbacks well into their 30's, Green Bay must address this position sooner rather than later. Veteran CB Al Harris told Scout.com back at the Pro Bowl earlier this year that he felt he had at least two good years left. Now would be a good time to start developing a younger cornerback.

2) Guard - Despite having some depth at the position, it's apparent that the coaches aren't set on their two starters at either spot at this point. Scout.com pointed out at this time last year that Green Bay could look at the guard position on the first day of draft. They wound up selecting Allen Barbre in the fourth round but he only was active for seven games last season.

3) Quarterback - New starting QB Aaron Rodgers only has two years left on his contract and the team doesn't have anyone of not set to play behind him. They'll need to get a veteran signal caller signed just for insurance.

Other Issues to Address

Tight End Depth

Offensive Tackle Depth

Defensive End Depth
