Flash Analysis |
With the 62nd pick in the draft, the Patriots finally addressed one of their top needs - the secondary. The selection of cornerback Terrence Wheatley, who visited Foxborough recently, addressed a void created by departures of Asante Samuel, Randall Gay and Eugene Wilson. Wheatley's proficiency in returning kicks (24.84 avg. 6th best in the Big 12 last year) as well as his ball-hawking skills (5 interceptions, 2nd in Big-12) pushed his value ahead of other defenders the team scouted closely. Wheatley should compete for nickel duty this season with the other veterans on the roster. - Jon Scott, Patriots Insider

Adam Caplan's Take |
New England was looking for a young and fast cornerback to compete for playing time in the spot vacated by Asante Samuel. Wheatley will start off behind a bunch of veterans this season but will eventually be given a shot at serious playing time.
